I started posting to VB about three weeks ago. The experience has been somewhat transformative. It's helped me to reflect about what I've learned, what I like and what I like to do. I know I want to write a blog.

I took this shot on a luxury safari at the Elephant Preserve in South Africa. I was at the beginning of my journey with photography. The image itself has gone viral. I'm embarrassed by the amount of "likes," peer awards and positive comments I've gotten from this community. I've become mostly a travel photographer in the years since. My camera sharpens my senses. It helps me connect with people. Great images are like the Cheshire Cat. Sometimes they pop right out from nowhere and sometimes they take time to develop. The real story of this photo happened later. Read more...Time
I took this early morning on a day in November. The sun was already up and it was dry. We were near the water hole. The herd was uneasy and stirring.Lighting
I never thought about lighting. My camera was set at ISO 400 and speed was set at 1/500 on burst mode.Equipment
I shot with a Nikon D300 with a AF-S DX VR 18-200 zoom Nikkor lens.Inspiration
This was a trip for "me." I'm an entrepreneur, a creative person and a freelance copywriter. All my life I've worked on everybody else's projects. This one was my choosing, but.... There is always "a but." This trip taught me a lot about how I wanted my future photography experiences to continue. I was one of 10 in a big 4 wheel vehicle. Guides told us what to expect next, helped with shooting, but it was vaguely unsatisfying. I was at the beginning of my photographic journey. On this trip I was too passive. There was not enough people interaction or personal involvement for me. Now, I consider myself a travel photographer. Yes, I take landscapes and other things, but I'm most drawn to human stories. I'm a streetwalker.Editing
YES... I've worked with this image for 13 years. It traces my learning curve in Lightroom. I hit my stride when I redid it B&W. That's what you see here. I like my newest version in color as well. I'll post it in the next appropriate contest. Just like in show business there is nothing like leaving them wanting more.In my camera bag
I still shoot with my Nikon D7000 and 18-200mm zoom. I have a prime 50mm 1.4 lens as well. Location dictates what I use. I carry a Black Rapid strap and a monopod. I always carry the grease that makes street photography easier.Feedback
Go with a safari outfitter with great guides. Get recommendations. (don't come to me. I lost touch with my guides.). Be prepared to spend the appropriate amount of big bucks. Sometimes you can get great pictures right in your proverbial backyard. Check out the right theme parks. Scout the locations. When you get there, hang out. Importantly, pick the best time to go. This shot was taken in November, but I like Spring here in the States for this kind of action. Time of day?
