Location

National Zoo in Washington, DC.

Time

Late morning right before lunchtime.

Lighting

It was taken in natural light while the sun was just starting to hit high.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 with my Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens. No flash was used or needed.

Inspiration

I love the big cats. Capturing their beauty is inspiring! This mother tiger was playing with her cubs, as she was stalking them she was also being vigilant about keeping a watchful eye out to protect them. When she came out of the bushes she noted some workers who were a bit too close for comfort - I was happy to capture it.

Editing

I believe the only post-processing done on this was a tad bit of color tweaking with Photoshop Elements.

In my camera bag

A Nikon D7000 camera. Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens, a Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G lens and a micro lens, the Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Lens. I recently purchased a Fujifilm XT-1 camera and have been using that of recent with a Fuji 18-135mm lens and a 55-200mm lens.

Feedback

Be patient! Photographing animals can be very unpredictable. It is also important to have the right equipment (good zoom lens) if you're shooting to get closeups. It's always good to use a tripod, or monopod, when photographing animals because of their random and/or erratic movements.
