Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a place called Tehotto, West Bengal, India. Its a rural area and I work there as a pubic service employee. There's a huge stretch of land opposite our office, where carious crops are cultivated according to seasons in plots owned by farmers. This was taken, as evident, in a mustard field there.

Time

Its was taken on 11 January 2019, at 10:13 am precisely. It was a fine sunny winter morning.

Lighting

I feel winters are best for photography using natural light. The sunlight is just perfect throughout the day- slanted rays, no harsh overhead light. And this was in the morning just after the fog had lifted- so all the better.

Equipment

Equipment used includes Canon 7D camera and 55-250 lens only.

Inspiration

Winter itself is an inspiration for someone into street, landscape or nature, or anything involving them. I try all of them, so winter makes me charged up more for photography. And there's my model Piku, a small local boy. His father owns a tea-shop beside our office, so I am always in touch with the boy. Piku is about 8/9 years old but I am shooting him from a much younger age, and he's quite an experienced model with regards to his age, one might say. He inspires me while playing- with others or alone, he inspires me with his fashion (thanks to his parents for that, though), he even inspires me while he sits idle. He can now help me in directing other children of his age (his friends) when I try shooting them. Next would obviously be the mustard fields. They are a prize to the eyes- the bed of golden flowers, bees hovering among them collecting honey... feels like heaven!

Editing

I am not accustomed to Photoshop, the main software. Yet I always process my pictures. I use the easier apps like Photoshop Express, Polarr and Snapseed. Though the mustard flowers are a sight for sore eyes, I made it in black and white because of the portrait nature of the picture. It is said black and white brings out the soul of the subject of a photograph, and that was the intent. Black and white does more justice than colour to the gaze of boy, his attire, the play of light and shadow.

In my camera bag

My bag contains Canon 7D camera body and lenses 18-55, 55-250. Recently I obtained a reverse ring for trying macro.

Feedback

Shooting another human always requires a level of trust and understanding between the photographer and the subject. Directing children are even more difficult. So, having a mutual connection helps. Communication is important. Shouting or scolding should be prohibited because tension will only hinder the the process of photography.
