Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the land surrounding Fort Sill, Oaklahoma. There are fields of wild flowers, with buffalo, prairie dogs, and steer roaming.

Time

This was taken in the early afternoon. Not the best time to be out shooting.

Lighting

I brought my exposure down on this one to keep the focus on her curves and highlight her face.

Equipment

Canon 5d mark iii, Sigmas Art 35mm, no flash, no tripod

Inspiration

My daughter-in-law was pregnant with her first child. She is a military spouse, who loves nature, so the nature preserve around the base was thebperfect place to shoot.

Editing

I opened this first in Lightroom and adjusted the lighting, and warmed it up a bit. Then I opened it into Photoshop where I used frequency seperation to smooth her skin some, because pregnancy hormones hadn't been kind to her. Then I brought the shadows down on the left, and brightened her face to reflect the joy and love she already had for her baby.

In my camera bag

I bring just about everything I own. Usually I have two bags, one with my favorite stuff, which includes the Canon d5, my Sigma Art 35mm, my Canon L series 100mm, and my Tamron 70-200mm. I also have a Canon Speedlight 580 EX II with a Gary Fong diffuser. I bring extra batteries for the flash and camera. I have a simple exposure disc to set white balance. And a tripod. In the second bag, which usually stsys in the car, I have a Canon 70d, with an Canon 85mm lens, and a Tamron 24-70, and another Canon Speedlight flash.

Feedback

This shot is all about the lighting. While I often shoot light and airy, I wanted this to to show more depth and emotion, so, I shot this with several different exposures. We got this one later in the afternoon so the sun wasn't as harsh. The shot I went woth was a little under exposed. The hills were far enough in the background that I didn't have to do any post work on the background.
