Late in February this smaller cousin of the Great Spotted Woodpecker starts to send its raucous unmelodious calls and song through the cold sunlit wood. Not so common as the Great Spotted with which it cohabits its drumming can be distinguished with its rapid fire. Faster drumming can be heard from the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker which in many parts of Europe is now faced with extinction since it is prayed upon by the Great Spotted and is starving due to lack of insects, especially wood butterflies and moths.
