Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Akrotiri, Cyprus while I was on a 3 month deployment with the RAF. I live in Norfolk so the chance to get some very different landscapes was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I had to buy myself a large camera bag to enable me to take all my camera gear with me and also hold the hand luggage I was required to carry.

Time

I was on my day off and set about cycling around the cliffs to see what scenery there was. I got underway just after lunch and after riding around the top of the cliffs I decided to try and get to the bottom. This was no easy feat but after abit of navigating and some careful footing I got to the bottom. After walking about for a little while I sat down on some very sharp rocks to take this picture around 15:00 before clambering back up the cliff to get my bike.

Lighting

I wanted to practice sharp focussing in the distance and found the lie was an ideal opportunity as there was plenty in the background to practice on and also with the waves on the rocks I could also try some long exposure to see how it would look as the waves crashed against the rock. It was abit calm but the motion was still what I was after from the long exposure.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon 1300D and the 18-55mm kit lense on a manfrotto 055 pro tripod. This was my first camera and loved it to bits but have since upgraded to a Canon 80d and have passed my 1300D onto my 8 year old son.

Inspiration

I live in a very flat area of the country and struggle to find areas of interest to me. Being in another country for 3 months with all my camera gear I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to take some scenic shots that are diffferent from what I was used to. Plus being still relatively new to photography I could use it as a fantastic learning session.

Editing

There was only minimal post processing done in photoshop CS5 which was to bring out the blue sky. It was blown out abit due to the intense sunshine that day.

In my camera bag

My bag struggles to contain everything I take nowadays. I have a TUBU hiking rucksack camer bag as it lets me put my Canon 80D, Canon F1.8 50mm, Canon 10-22mm and Tamron 17-270mm in the bottom and leaves space for some everyday items in the top for when I used to fly out on deployment. I generally also carry compass, torch, filters, lense ball, tripod (strapped to the side), lense Hester (for when I’m doing star trails), power bank (for lense heater) and a few spare batteries. To say it weighs abit is an understatement I really should slim down what I carry.

Feedback

This for me was an adventure as there was no prior planning or research carried out on the location, I just got on my bike threw my bag over my shoulders and headed out to see what I could find. To me this is a fun way to explore a location if you haven’t been there before and you never know what you might find.
