Behind The Lens

Location

Phoenix, Arizona, USA

Time

Early evening, roughly 5:30pm.

Lighting

Honestly, nothing crazy. Just good solid natural sunlight. I wanted a harsh look so it was just me and the sun, no reflectors or anything.

Equipment

Well, since this is a self portrait I utilized a tripod and set the camera to a timer. Then I’d press the shutter and run to my pre-focused spot in the frame.

Inspiration

Haha, pretty much every good movie about cops. The epic lighting, sunglasses, intense expressions, etc.

Editing

Yep! Mostly a bunch of glorified dodging and burning. Some localized vignerons to accentuate the framing, and then some slight desaturation.

In my camera bag

I usually pack light. A telephoto Zion lens, an 85mm, and a wide angle for landscapes.

Feedback

Just experiment. Get out early, start shooting in the crappy light to work out the kinks so you’re ready for the good light when it hits. Don’t worry too much about your location, just start shooting!
