Behind The Lens

Location

This image was created at Wanaka, Queenstown, New Zealand

Time

I love my stitched panoramas. So a lot of the images I created during our 2 weeks trip to Queenstown in New Zealand were stitched. Hubby and I stayed at Wanaka for a week and this was one of the sunrises I chased for 7 consecutive days. Each morning was different and it such a magical scene to watch. The calmness of the lake was just mesmerising. The moment I arrived at the lake before the sun rises, photographers, hobbyists and visiting tourists flocked by the lake to take a photo of this most photographed tree in the world, the "Wanaka Tree". Lucky for me I stayed there for 7 nights, so I have all the time. And guess what! After the sun had risen over the horizon, people disappeared and I had the tree all to myself. This was created on 13 May 2018 at 6:52am. It's composed of 5 landscape frames manually stitched panorama.

Lighting

I love creating sunrise images with clouds present to have that subtle effect of the light from the sun while rising. This scene is a just perfect with some blues and gold colours in the sky. By using the right settings, I made sure the lighting between the foreground and background is balanced. In saying that, the foreground is still seen and not dark while the sky is not over exposed.

Equipment

This was created using a Canon EOS 5Ds, 15mm Fisheye lens, Manfrotto Tripod and a remote shutter cable release

Inspiration

Lake and reflections are my favourite subjects to photograph. Lake Wanaka is my perfect subject, hence we stayed there for 7 nights and chased the sunrise every single morning. A dream came true.

Editing

Post processing is necessary when it comes to landscape photography. I always shoot raw and process it initially using Photoshop Lightroom to adjust the highlights, shadows, brightness and contrast. Then I do the advanced processing including the manual stitching in Photoshop Creative Suite. After stitching, I work on finishing touches such as, levels, curves, exposure etc. until I'm happy with the final output.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon 5D Mark III with the Canon EF 17-40mm lens with 5 extra batteries, ND filter, remote shutter cable release, cleaning kit and my glasses of course.

Feedback

As the saying goes "Good things come to those who wait". If you want to be a great photographer, you got to have a lot of patience as creating that perfect image involves a lot of waiting. I don't have patience with fishing but I certainly do have heaps when it comes to photography. I'm addicted to it especially when I'm determined to get what I wanted. Even if the mozzies would eat me alive, I'd still wait for that right moment that will make my image the way it should be.
