Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken in the suburbs of Bhaktapur (Nepal)
Time
This photo was taken on December 3rd, 2018 at 10:09am.
Lighting
As far as possible, I'm in use to take advantage of natural light. It is very important to check the weather forecast mostly if your journey plan doesn't allow to spend more than a couple of days on the site. Moreover, in this specific case there wasn't time for setting and using a flash.
Equipment
This image was shot on a Nikon D600 with a NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED VR lens without involving neither a tripod nor a flash.
Inspiration
While walking around the narrow streets of the suburbs of Bhaktapur, I noticed this elderly woman while walking toward her house across the debris of the close buildings. I try to capture the contrast between the past of devastation for the earthquake of 2015, represented by the gray and the strong shadows of the damaged buildings and the rubble in the foreground, and the future represented by the "light at the end of the tunnel" and the colors of the new buildings recently restored or rebuilt in the background. In the middle the human frailty represented by the elderly lady who continues to carry out her daily life almost suspended in this transition of time but walking toward the future.
Editing
Yes, I did. I regulated shadows and lights by Adobe LR in order to bring out the texture of the buildings. Moreover, I decrease a bit the saturation to give to the picture an atmosphere a bit more dramatic, according to the environment and the message I wanted to convey.
In my camera bag
As a frequent traveller and backpacker adicted, my choise in term of gear is usually a good tradeoff between quality and size/weight. I use two bodies NIKON D610, NIKON D600 and the following lens and filters: NIKKOR AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR, NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED VR, NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED N VR, NIKKOR AF-S 50mm f/1.8G. Few accessories complete my equipment: KENKO Digital Filter Circular PL, MANFROTTO Tripod MK293A4-A3RC1, METZ Flash Mecablitz 52 AF-1.
Feedback
The most difficult part is to discover meaningful and interesting street scenes, catching them at the right time and in the right way trying to "tell the story". As a traveler before than a photographer, I'm really interested in culture and habits so I like to spend time walking along the streets and talking with people. Concerning the composition, I suggest to move a lot in order to discover the best place to shot and to take the photo from a different point of view with respect to the usual natural one.
