Behind The Lens

Location

Took this shot on an impromptu walkabout shoot in my 1st Day arriving for a shoot in Macau. Couldn't sleep, jetlagged. And the evening turned foggy and misty as I ventured out from my hotel. I had grabbed my camera, but was more interested in the walk to clear my head for sleep than getting any shots. I snapped a few, but loved this location, because it was so UGLY. I though the open water would give me a good reflection shot of the casinos, but the side location was full of cement walls and barriers and waterside loading dock. The haze and humidity we're really working against me. But I specifically remember NOT liking this shot location at ALL. So I punched in, framed a few quick shots, and huffed on. Reviewing the shots later, exactly what I thought. Bunch of foggy (but you know, artistic....blah) and so-so pictures that didn't do Macau any justice. Except for one. This gem. The water and breeze gave me a random keeper, where I thought I had nothing. I posted the shot, and the casino on the water asked to use my shot in their promotion materials the next morning. To me, this was a 'lucky shot' and has more value to me in that way, than the composition or technical aptitude.

Time

Midnight

Lighting

Yeah, didn't take any. Not a thing.

Equipment

My 1st out of country tour with the Nikon Z7. Z 24-70mm F4, and 35/85 F1.8 primes. No lights. No tripod.

Inspiration

Insomnia can be your best inspiration.

Editing

Yes, basic Lightroom adjustments. Nothing to drastic or color changes.

In my camera bag

Normally, I have it all. Lights, audio, selection of good lenses, a high detailed still camera, and a qualified video rig set-up. But sometimes you don't want to bring the whole rolling case on a walk.

Feedback

Just shoot. It's never worth it to NOT press the button. You might get more than you think.
