Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in Joshua Tree National Park, in Joshua Tree, CA.....one of my favorite places to shoot!

Time

Right here it was probably about an hour before sunset. And it was soooo cold the whole day! If I remember correctly, the warmest it got that day was 43 degrees F. So, at the time of the photo, I believe it was about 37 degrees F! Freezing for us California people!

Lighting

The sun was coming down in the sky, and I loved the light and shadows on the mountains straight ahead, as well as the shadows going across the trail.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark II, along with my Canon 24-105mm L-series lens.

Inspiration

I took this photo because I loved the light on the mountains straight ahead, I loved the sky, and I liked my husband being in the frame on the trail, too. I also loved the way this tree coming down from the right hand corner was sort of looming over me, and I wanted to try to capture some of it in a way that gave the viewer the same feeling I had. And I really just love these trees and this landscape! It never gets old shooting there!

Editing

I did, but not a whole bunch! I lightened up some of the deeper shadows, added a touch of contrast, and added on a slight matte finish.

In my camera bag

I always have three backup batteries, two different ND filters, a circular polarizing filter, a few memory cards, a cleaning cloth, a couple of different remote triggers, and some replacement batteries for one of the remote triggers!

Feedback

Well, my biggest advice would be to simply go to this park!!! It is an incredible place with so many different areas to explore! It looks like another planet at times! You will find amazing scenes all over the park! The best time to go would be in the spring...before it gets too hot and before kids are out of school and it gets really packed. I took this particular photo in the winter, the day after Thanksgiving, and we had to wait in line in our car to even get in, although it still did not feel crowded inside the park, which was great! While exploring this particular area where I took the photo, it truly seemed like we were all alone out there! But if you'd rather not wait in line to get in, I'd probably say that going during Thanksgiving break is probably not the best idea!
