Location
This photo was taken at the lake just 7 miles from our home, in an area where trumpeter swans are held.Time
This is one of my favorite shots as it isn't often I see female cardinals out and about. It was mid morning and I was sitting near a feeding site used by the conservation officers at the lake. I had already spied a male cardinal and two blue jays when this sweet lady flew out of some brush. Before I could get a shot of her on the ground, she flew up onto a branch in the brush, turned to look at me and I pressed my button on the camera.Lighting
Mid-morning sun wasn't yet high in the sky, but provided just the right amount of light for this shot. Much higher and the sunlight would have washed out her beautifulI used a colors.Equipment
I used a Nikon d5600 DSLR camera with a 70-300mm lens.Inspiration
I love animals and birds, especially in nature. Cardinals are one of my favorite birds to get photos of as I feel they are so very expressive. I was in the right spot at the right time for what I consider a great shot.Editing
I did very little editing as this is mainly a hobby for me and I prefer a more natural look.In my camera bag
My d5600 Nikon camera, 2 different sized lens, small tripod, lensball, and some prisms.Feedback
Know what you are looking for. I am friends with a couple other hobby photographers and we often "haunt" the same locations. So we usually discuss what the best times for taking pictures is, when we've seen various animals and birds in the area, etc. I know of one friend who spent an entire morning from dawn until noon sitting patiently, hoping to catch a shot of some cardinals in the same place I got this shot. It feels great when the shot is worth the time spent waiting.
