Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home studio in Tennessee. I had not taken my studio gear out for some time and it felt good to do a few setups and shots.

Time

Evryyear I try and set up my mini studio during the long winter months. I find that taking my time and putting an effort into my work pays off at the end. This was one of those shots taken during the winter.

Lighting

In this shot I wanted to highlight to color of The Azureite and the Malichite, so I lite the scean with filtered light from the sides and then added a spot light from the back. This shot only required three flash lights to get the result I was looking for.

Equipment

This photo was done with my Canon D30, tripod, whites lighting flash system and a some fill cards.

Inspiration

As an avid mineral and gem collector I'm always inspired to show off the wonderful world of gems. Each of the minerals I have has a story all it own and when shooting I try to let the specimens speak to me!

Editing

Most of my post processing is done in Lightroom and PS. When shooting I try to not have to rely on post processing, so I spent a lot of time getting the lighting correct before I hit the shutter.

In my camera bag

My camera equipment is a collection from the last 30 years of shooting. Flash equipment, tripods, filters, fill cards and lots of aluminum foil!

Feedback

My advise is just be inspired by your subject. Try different angles starting from far away and then move in closer. I've done many similar shots just using natural light and bounce cards, so never think you can't get quality results with just simple equipment. The last thing I would say is take your time and just have fun!
