The kids went to New Mexico to visit the grandparents and couldn't remember what size t-shirt I wear so they brought this home. It is also one if the first test shots with my new "nifty-fifty". I think I love this lens!

Behind The Lens

Location

This one was captured on my kitchen breakfast bar.

Time

Early evening.

Lighting

Done be afraid to go with the Manual setting. Experiment with different light levels in the same location. You can get very different outcomes with the same composition by using different exposure scenarios. I prefer natural and available lighting to flash for photos like this one.

Equipment

Camera: Canon 7D mk2. Lens: Canon 50mm f1.8 (the Nifty Fifty) Handheld, no flash.

Inspiration

I was "pushing" DOF and bokeh. It was one of a few with different f-stops and shutter speeds. I wanted to see how much "more" I could get by going wide open.

Editing

Very minimal post. Temperature adjustment a bit due to the lighting in that part of my house.

In my camera bag

My trusty Canon 7D M2, battery grip, Canon 28-200mm, Canon 50mm f1.8, Canon 70-200mm f4, Sigma 18-70mm lenses. I always have a sturdy tripod within reach. I like available light so, no flash. Oh, 6 batteries and an embarrassing number of SD cards.

Feedback

First thing is put your camera in Manual Mode. Play by the "rules" then break them. Take your time and experiment with the "exposure triangle". You can always reformat your card, you can't experience the shot you didn't take. Try handheld and with a tripod. Just have fun with it. My main genre is Shooting Sports but I make it a point to look for something "else" be it butterflies, birds, bugs, pretty much anything that has nothing to do with the match I'm shooting that day. And, like I said, have fun with it.
