Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the War Eagles Air Museum located at the Dona Ana County Airport, Santa Teresa, NM just west of El Paso Texas.

Time

Shot on February 5th 2019 at 3:51 PM MST.

Lighting

The main light source is from the translucent hanger door directly in front of the aircraft and the skylights in the roof. The day was very overcast and the house lights were not on.

Equipment

Taken with Sony A7II, Sony 24~70mm f4. 24mm 1/160 @ f4, ISO 1600

Inspiration

I'm a great fan of WWII aircraft so when I was in El Paso I took the opportunity to visit the museum. This P 40 is one of the finest examples of this aircraft that I have ever seen. No hanger queen, this P 40 is fully airworthy having served with the 23 Fighter Group in China.

Editing

Minimal processing in Lightroom, reduced highlights and opened up shadows. Sharping 40, Noise Reduction 38, Clarity +23

In my camera bag

I usually have the Sony A7II with 24-70mm for wide angle and the Sony A6500 with 18-135mm as a walk around camera. I also carry the super sharp Zeiss 24mm f1.8 and Sony 70~200 f4. If I want to travel very light the Sony RX100 IV is in my pocket.

Feedback

Museum lighting can be very challenging with overhead lights creating specular highlights on all the aircraft. The War Eagles Air Museum mainly relies on ambient light from the large translucent hanger doors and the skylights, this makes for more diffused light but on an overcast day the light level is quite low. I carried with me a small hand held LED light to use for close ups of engine details, this worked very well.
