Location
On a whale watching trip with San Diego Whale Watching Cruises.Time
The trip departed around 9:00 AM and this shot was taken around 10:30 AM.Lighting
It was a mix of sun and clouds but all in all quite sunny.Equipment
Nikon D750 with a 24-120 Nikor lens, camera was hand held as the boat was crowded.Inspiration
I was hoping to get a good shot of whales and or dolphins, we we’re about an hour into the cruise, when a small pod of dolphins began to follow us. They seemed to be racing the boat and I loved their energy.Editing
I used a minimal amount of post processing as I cropped the shot, sharpened it a bit and adjusted the color balance.In my camera bag
I have my D750 and sometimes carry a Nikon 1 mirrorless, when I travel I usually only take my 24-120 lens and a Really Right Stuff Travel Tripod. I am a big fan of Really Right Stuff Tripods, they are solid, well built, easy to use and made in the US. I have a 60mm 1:1 Macro lens and an 80-400 zoom. I try to keep my equipment to a minimum when I travel. I had a backup Nikon D80 I used with extension tubes and as a second body if needed but it needs to be repaired and it isn’t worth the expense.Feedback
Pick a good spot on the boat and steady yourself and be ready to shoot as quickly as possible, the seas were rough the day we went out so the boat was pitching a lot so it was hard to steady yourself for the shot.
