Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my flat in Saint Petersburg. I usually shoot on the background that are in my home studio, but this time we decided to shoot in the living.

Time

It was in the afternoon, we used strobe lighting since ambient lighting was insufficient without bumping the ISO to levels I didn't want to.

Lighting

The scene is lit by two strobes, one modified by a softbox, illuminating the room and the other with a beauty dish, illuminating the model face. The idea was to get a contrasty look but without making it too obvious that artificial lighting was being used.

Equipment

This was shoot with my Lumix GX8 and 25mm lens. A Godox AD200 and Godox TT600 were used for lighting.

Inspiration

The idea for this look came from the model. We then further refined it with the makeup artist and finally shoot it in my apartment.

Editing

I always retouch my photos. My workflow includes a first color correction and mild toning done in Capture One, followed by skin retouching and dodge and burn to make the image pop. I don't do frequency separation, usually, and surely didn't need it to do use that technique with this model. I then finish by further adjusting color levels to my taste.

In my camera bag

I carry a small bag, I have there only my Lumix GX8 and a couple of prime lenses. I don't give much importance to the gears I use, I think that currently basically any camera and lens on the market is capable of producing astonishing images.

Feedback

When shooting with models I always try to get a connection so that everybody is comfortable working together. It is important that every team member does their best in their role. Work with a great team and the results are always going to be great.
