This was taken two days after the polar vortex that hit our city of Chicago. On this night there was no wind to worry about. Just the cold and tranquility of a cold winter night. Many photographers will or would hesitate to go out in the cold. But "we" must place endurance and great character first. In order to capture this moments that make us remember such great events in history.
Hope you as a photographer enjoy your moments. I DO!

Behind The Lens

Location

This great moment is taken in the City of Chicago Illinois. The address is from Columbus Drive bridge. The exact point is almost at the middle of the bridge of Columbus Drive. Overlooking West from Lake Michigan.

Time

The time of the day. I had to look at my processing information. The Time was a few hours before sunrise exactly 435am. It was a cold braving moment since I clearly remember the brutal cold of a polar vortex prior days. My batteries where not even lasting the normal usage.

Lighting

It was a very tricky moment to capture. The camera was so cold to handle plus the sensor was ready to give up on normal light focus. I used a Manual lense that also required a manual setting with a ISO 100 on camera. The F stop was set to 22 on my Lense a manual lense. The shutter speed was set at 1/5 of a second. Used the bridge as a tripod to handle less shake. The light and color was been changed automatically by the cold and wind.

Equipment

The camera I used was a Nikon 7200. The lense an Opteka 6.5mm with a AF Tele-Converter 2X from Tamron. No tripod only the bridge as anti shaker. No flash needed. Three batteries that where drain quickly.

Inspiration

The inspirational moment that made me wonder into the night was the Polar vortex. It was brutally cold for a couple of days and wanted to see the ice on the Chicago river walk. The photographer in me was just filled with curiosity of what wonders nature had dropped on our city. The amount of countless cold landscapes fully covered on ice my intention to capture. Just wanted to show the world that our Chicago river would also freeze and our ice breakers will do the ultimate job to break making a path for barges to flow with all commercial needs.

Editing

About this processing. It was so much fun to process but had to do a lot of adjustments that would make this moment to stand out. The file originally was in RAW later to be seen in Jpeg format. My Whites where lowered. The Black was adjusted to bright. Clarity was bumped about 30 percent. The Yellow was increased to help all colors stand out. The amount of Sharpening was at 60 percent. If you are to look to the top left of Trump tower, a shooting star is real as it gets putting a smile on processing!

In my camera bag

The equipment that I normally used is simple. The camera is a Nikon 7200. The lenses are. An Opteka 6.5mm Fish eye. A Tamron tele-converter 2X. Tamron 70-300mm A Nikon 18-55mm DX standard issue when buying camera. Camera batteries. Gloves. Extra Hoodie or sweater avoiding sweet on this cold evening, just enough to keep warm. A tripod that was hardly used.

Feedback

As the photographer that can inspire a moment. Just remember to know your limits with health. A moment will always be missed by the naked eye but the camera will always help in making a Masterpiece come to life. Do your homework. By memorizing the actual settings that work and did not work. Specially in time as critical as a Polar vortex and your health is at stake. Dress as warm but not overdoing it. Meaning dress for the cold but manage to be able to move, feel and keep warm body parts. Always keep a time limit! Yes a time limit to be in a cold climate will help to prevent unfortunate events and manage to save your equipment from damage. Your city our City of Chicago will always change no matter the weather and climate temperatures. To try to capture something similar everyone can. The amount of detail that can be captured in a city just before the sunrise can be vast with intentions to capture something similar would make it the same, but different. Always keep your cellphone charge never know when you might have to used it!
