As I walked the narrow street of Rua de Santa Maria, Funchal, where cars ar e not allowed to drive, as the bistro chairs and tables spill out from the shops into the streets, I noticed the art on the doors.

This is the old part of the city, not far from the water’s edge and it’s feeling the effects of age.
In an effort to revitalise the area, the local council had organised a street art project round 2016. And, as I discover quite quickly, it involves the doors of the buildings.

About 200 doors – into houses, restaurants, businesses, galleries – have been handed over to artists and designers who have been asked to ‘do something with them’. Their canvases invite people inside every day. The idea is to create a piece of work that invites people in to something deeper. A way of drawing attention to the older part of Funchal. If you have not seen it, I would say, go and take a look, most inspiring. (I will try and post some more soon
