Behind The Lens

Location

It was a slow day in the Kgalagadi Desert that afternoon with not much happening. I came across this lonesome male Ostrich around sunset. Staying with it I noticed it started taking a sand bath. With the setting sun I moved my vehicle to get the sun directly in front of my lens, contrary to the rules of photography. I needed to light up the dust coming off the Ostrich. Done!

Time

This took place late afternoon as the sun was setting over the desert giving dramatic effects for those patient enough to look for that one shot.

Lighting

With the sharp sun light I ensured I under exposed the image in order to highlight the bright dust to add to the drama of the shot of this usually very boring subject.

Equipment

All Canon. 1DX MkII with the F4 600mm prime lens.

Inspiration

The angle of the sun inspired me. I just needed a subject no matter how mundane it was. I knew with the angle of the sun I could make something out of nothing. Without the sharp sun-rays this image would be a non-starter

Editing

Sharpening, crop and lots of contrast

In my camera bag

2 x 1DX MkII's F4 600mm prime 100-400mm zoom Flash, I always a carry a powerful flash with me even in the daylight. You never know when you need to use it to fill shadows or add drama or saturation to a shot
