Ferruginous hawks are typically residents of the wide open areas of the Great Plains of the central U.S., but in winter often migrate to California's short grass agricultural lands, where food is plentiful (mainly mice). A new sighting for us, this adult has temporarily made its home in the 5,000-foot high Sierra Valley near Sierraville, California. One of the most beautifully patterned raptors we have ever seen.
