Behind The Lens

Location

This beautiful lighthouse stands in Cape Reinga, the northernmost point of New Zealand. In Maori this place is called Te Rerenga Wairua and is sacred site. The spirits of deceased maori leave New Zealand in Cape Reinga to travel to their home island to rest in peace.

Time

I made the trip to Cape Reinga from Auckland. I left before noon and arrived just in time for sunset.

Lighting

A storm was coming and the sky was divided in two colors, blue and purple. The amount of light and colors were perfect for a good dusky shot. I had only few minutes of light left before it was to dark and rains started.

Equipment

This was taken with the Sony alpha 7S II and a Canon 24-70mm f4. No other equipment involved.

Inspiration

I heard the story about this place being sacred to Maori people and why. When I came to the place and I saw the storm in the distance with this slot shape hole of light on the horizon the Cape appeared to me as a magical or mystical place as well. I was standing on the very top of New Zealand, looking to some heavenly world in the distance. The red path leading to the clean white lighthouse and the colors in the sky inspired me a colorful and dusky shot. I wanted people to see the place like "the edge of the world".

Editing

I shot RAW all the time and I wanted to work on colors here. The moment was so colorful with that unreal sky. I had to work on saturation to push the colors up in the grass and the sky. I brought up a bit the bright spot on the horizon as well to make it pop in the shot. I finally enhanced the path and lighthouse to drive the eye better in the frame.

In my camera bag

I have a Sony a7S II camera with a CANON 24-70mm f4, a SAMYANG 14mm f2.8, a SIGMA 150-600mm f5-6.3 and a CANON 50mm f1.8. I also have an Helios 44-2 58mm f2 lens made in USSR. And a Pola filter.

Feedback

Sometimes a photo is fully completed after a good edit. This is a good example where I had an emotion and an idea when I discovered the place that a simple unedited shot couldn't express. I had to reveal what I experienced and the idea I want to transmit by working in post on the mood of the scene.
