Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken in my bathroom late one evening. It's a rather homely and small space with many reflective surfaces and always a challenge to set a nice lighting.
Time
During daytime we were outdoors shooting some bikini fashion and it was super chilly outside. When we got back to my place in the evening, Vixen van der Zee wanted to get some warmth back into her limbs. So these bathtub pics were actually very spontaneous night shots where Vixen just yelled at me from the bathroom to bring the camera and create some more art.
Lighting
I quickly put up a single light source and just used the pilot light, and then crammed up the ISO a bit. Personally, feeling always trumps sharpness when it comes to these kinds of moody images. It was a soft situation and I wanted the light to reflect that. Both me and Vixen find more depth in darkness than the sterility of bright lights.
Equipment
This was a handheld shot (I'm shooting the vast majority of people pics handheld) with a Canon 5D iv and my go-to lens 24-70 2.8L. One simple elinchrom strobe with an 80 cm rotalux deep octa mounted on.
Inspiration
It would be enough with one word to say what inspired this photo: Vixen. She is my perfect muse and always bring so much to the table. I wanted to capture her beauty and the emotions she was portraying. Strength and confidence in a calm and soothing setting.
Editing
I had to bring up the RAW file to see what kind of post processing was done. There's a tiny bit of skin retouching in the highlights. Other than that it's as straight out of camera it gets. Just some overall adjustments in ACR regarding contrast/highlights/shadows/temp.
In my camera bag
If no special equipment/lenses are required for the job, I always have a Canon 5D and my trusty 24-70 mm with me. I usually pack a backup lens such as a 50 mm prime, or 100 mm prime. I have my speedlight w/ radiotransmitter, extra batteries and memory cards. And always bring a cleaning cloth.
Feedback
Bathrooms are often tricky. White reflective surfaces and sometimes windows and glass doors. Be smart in placing your light sources, and yourself. If you want a fully lit scene maybe you need a second light to reduce hard reflections, but I would definitely advice you to KISS it. (Keep It Simple Stupid) It's very easy to use too much light and get a sterile and boring look overall. Make sure to crop your scenes. Perhaps there's an ugly faucet that needs to be omitted? Play some appropriate music to set the mood :)
