Behind The Lens

Location

Originaly I has planned to travel for sunrise but when I looked out at the sky it didn't look very promissing so I decided to just head to my local beach in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, UK

Time

I set off out at 5:30am hoping to capture sunrise but there was very little colour so decided to try shooting for black and white images experimenting with the wave movement this image was captured at the latter end of the shoot at 6:50 am

Lighting

It was a rather dull moody cloudy morning so I just added a two stop Neutral density filter to reduce the shutter speed to 1 second as generally I like a shutter speed between half a second and two seconds for water motion shots.

Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, tripod, cable release and Lee two stop Neutral Density filter

Inspiration

When I looked at the morning sky I was quite dissapointed so didnt want to waste my time travelling but was itching to get out with my camera so decided to head to my local beach just 5 minutes fom home. I thought these breakwaters would be great for some black and white moody images making the best of a dissapointing morning.

Editing

I made a few tweeks to shadows and highlights in lightroom and converted to black and white in Silver Efex pro 2 and cropped to a square ratio to improve composition

In my camera bag

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EOS 7D, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens, 0.3, 0.6 x2, 0.9 x2 hard graduated Lee filters, 0.6 ND filter, Big Stopper, Little Stopper, Circular polariser, landscape circular polariser, manual white balance card, misc cleaning products

Feedback

Just get out with your camera and experiment let the creative juices flow and enjoy yourself
