Location
This photo is of the Yosemite Valley Chapel, nestled within the Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park.Time
Nighttime is the best time to be in Yosemite Valley. This photo was taken shortly after midnight, when as a snowstorm was receding from the area.Lighting
This photo has a high degree of contrast. Shutting down the brightly lit church and snowy foreground while holding the lens open long enough to expose the stars was a task, and eventually was accomplished, however well, but compositing two photos, one for the sky, and one for the foreground.Equipment
This photo was shot with a Canon 5D Mk ii mounted on a Monfrotto aluminum tripod (heavy). The lens is the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 that is my standard workhorse for landscape photography.Inspiration
Yosemite Valley, in Yosemite National Park, is up to now, my favorite location in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for photography. You can find loads of great photography locations 6-8,000 ft elevation zone, but few will have as many good subject locations that can be easily moved between than in the Valley. This scene, on this particular night was inspiring because I had been having minimal luck up until then due to a clearing snowstorm that had blanketed the Valley. When the clouds began to break open, the Orion system was conveniently visible right above the Valley Chapel. This chapel has stood for decades in the Valley, guarding and providing for the occupants of the Valley, much like Orion, the might Hunter provides for the stars.Editing
I try to use minimal post-processing, especially for night photography. I end up taking a lot of photos. This scene has a highly contrasted dark sky with stars, and a brightly lit church and snowy foreground. Multiple rounds of exposure settings eventually netted a few usable photographs. In my camera bag
Besides my trusty body and main lens (Canon's 24-70 f/2.8) I carry precious few other accouterments. Besides spare batteries, and cleaning supplies, most notable in my pack is likely a couple of remote triggers that can be operated without having to stand near the camera. This proves to be vital equipment on cold nights in the Parks.Feedback
The Yosemite Valley is a photographer's dream location. Of course, Ansel paved the way for many photogs to seek out the Valley's, and Yosemite National Park's, natural treasures. One just has to get here, in any season, on any day, at any time of the day, and there are always wonders to behold.
