During the last major snowfall a few days ago I wanted to go out into the woods and capture wintery scenes with my camera. After some time I could feel the cold seeping into my clothes and my fingers had become numb. While shooting photos of a stream and snow covered trees, my hat and jacket gathered snow quickly despite me shaking myself off occasionally. So, I thought a self-portrait was in order. Shot on my Canon 5D Mark IV

Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo in the woods right next to my home, literally about 50 steps from where I live. It was snowing, freezing cold, and I had to protect my camera from the snow that gathered quite quickly.

Time

I took this mid-morning during a heavy snowfall.

Lighting

The light is completely natural. The interesting thing is that when it's a bright but snowy day, the light is reflected in various directions due to the snow on the ground, in the trees, even as it falls.

Equipment

I did this with just my Canon 5D MarkIV on a tripod and the Canon remote app on my phone. I would focus the shot remotely, then set my pose and wait for the 10 second timer I set to expire.

Inspiration

I wanted a great wintery, rugged looking shot of myself. I was hoping this particular day would do the trick. I think it came through. :)

Editing

Yes, I used Adobe Lightroom to add a faded, slightly grainy look. I wanted to keep the bright of the white, but mute the darks a bit.

In my camera bag

Way too much, as I've mentioned in a previous Behind the Lens... 2 Canon cameras, a few lenses, 2 flashes, a plethora of memory cards, and a lot of hope.

Feedback

This first topic I'd hit on-- prepare for the cold, dress warmly. On this particular day the cold really crept up on my quickly. Because I couldn't wear gloves because I needed dexterity to operate my camera and cell phone, my fingers became numb. I had to take a break and go back into the warmth for a bit. Also be patient if you're doing a shot like this on your own - You'll probably take a dozen shots or more just to get one you really like.
