Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my studio, I am in Vienna, West Virginia. I am a self taught maternity photographer.

Time

This was taking in the mid-afternoon in the studio.

Lighting

I love the monochrome look of the charcoal on charcoal with only one light source. I wanted this look to be more editorial than your basic maternity photos and have a more high end vibe. The soft light just cascades down her face and showcases her beauty.

Equipment

This was taken on a Canon 5d Mark IV, with a sigma 35mm art lens, with an Einstein light, 86 PLM and shot pretty wide open.

Inspiration

I was looking for a a more editorial style maternity image. I wanted to show off connection but in a studio it can be more challenging. For me this tells the story of beauty in waiting.

Editing

For this particular shot, I used some color balance, and level adjustments as well as cleaned up the background and added a touch of a texture overlay just on the background and finally ran portraiture over the image!

In my camera bag

In my bag you will always find, my Sigma 35mm, my body is a Canon 5d Mark IV, I also use an A1 flash,135mm, tons and tons of memory cards. Also I have an "emergency" kit with things like Motrin, bobby pins, double sided tape, batteries, chapstick, and pretty much anything you may need during a photoshoot. as well as a drawing my little girls made me!

Feedback

Keep practicing with studio light until you find what you like! It doesn't have to be what everyone else is doing. Embrace the shadows and get it perfect in camera!
