Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in Galveston, TX. If I remember correctly, it was the first week after Hurricane Ike hit us.

Time

This was shot around mid afternoon/early evening.

Lighting

Not really great lighting since it was an overcast day.

Equipment

At the time, all I had was a Nikon D40, I believe I used my kit lens (18-55mm.)

Inspiration

This used to be a store I frequented when I was in the area for a fishing trip. It was sad seeing it completely gutted from the Hurricane and I wanted to document it since Hurricane Ike affected my family & I.

Editing

I did darken the photo some to give it a bit of a surreal feel about it, removed some of the debris that was scattered and some other on-lookers. I left one passer-by to give a sense of scale to the image. Then I brightened the light ray for a more dramatic look.

In my camera bag

I no longer have the equipment that I did back then. Now I have a Canon Rebel EOS T6 and several telephoto lenses, that's about all I carry in my daily bag.

Feedback

To capture something sad, make sure you can handle the emotions that will come flooding in! Disaster is never fun nor pretty but it does make for some interesting pictures (depending on the subject!)
