Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in our studio. I like to use the floor there very often for pictures.

Time

It should have been early in the afternoon. The weather was quite rainy that day.

Lighting

The main light is from the window right above the model. To compensate the shadows on the left side, we used a LED panel on a low level.

Equipment

The photo was taken with the oldie but goldie Nikon D700 and AF-S 85mm f/1.4G stopped down to f/2.5. Left above the model, a Phottix Kali600 Studio LED lighten the shadows on something between 10% or 15% Power.

Inspiration

I love to use the window and the wooden floor as a combination with a lying pose in this studio. There is a whole range of Photos done with this setup and I try constantly to create new variations. This was the first attempt, that I have used the LED panel to brighten up the shadows on the opposite side from the main light (window).

Editing

Raw processing and color grading were done in Capture One. Some skin retouching were done in Photoshop: Healing brush (remove blemish), Frequency Separation (soften skin transitions), Dodge & Burn (refine skin texture).

In my camera bag

Usually two Bodies (a Nikon D810 and a D700), my my favorite lens the 85mm f/1.4, a 50mm f/1.8 and a 35mm f/1.4. A few little things I don't want to miss: plaster, wet wipes, towel, additional batteries, Bahlsen Pickup busicits (everyone likes these) and water.

Feedback

The easy setup with one soft main light (a big window on a hazy day is perfect) and a second less powerful light with adjustable colour temperature helps a lot (otherwise use gels or cinefoil to adjust the colour temperature on a strobe). Really, really underexpose the photo – similar to a low key, the light skin areas should be correctly exposed.
