Behind The Lens
Location
We installed a bird feeder on the railing of our back porch. This gives us the chance to see a variety of birds up close and even observe their behavior. It is interesting to be able to see them become comfortable as they get used to the feeder and us. I shot this picture through our back window.Time
Morning, but not early morning since the light is not good enough when the sun first comes up. It is tricky getting enough light so that the shutter speed can be high enough to avoid motion blur. Later in the day is difficult because the sun can be too bright so that detail is hard to capture.Lighting
Early morning is good for the position of this feeder when the light is indirect or gets filtered through the trees on the horizon. Taking multiple shots increases the chances of capturing a still bird.Equipment
Canon 80D with L series 100-400 zoom lens. Natural light. Hand held as a tripod is too limiting to capture natural animal behavior.Inspiration
I loved the color of the bird and the that it was 'waiting in line' to eat at the feeder below it.Editing
Some cropping from 400mm, sharpening, and evening out of light so that the face stood out.In my camera bag
For nature photography, normally only have the Canon 80D and the 100-400 zoom lens, which is already a lot to carry given the weight of the lens! I've gone away from using filters as they seem to degrade the sharpness.Feedback
Take light into consideration, your angle to the subject, and shoot lots of frames!
