Behind The Lens

Location

Whenever I see this picture it reminds me of the stunning scenery, calm and chilly winds, and the naturally carved dark-brown mountains of Baralachha La-Pass in the Zaskar Range of The Himalayas. The place is a wonder!

Time

I remember me and my family getting up early around 6 in the morning and to reach this place we had to travel almost 50km Uphill from the hotel we were staying in Jispa, a small village in Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh. It took us almost 2 hours to reach there and the place was covered with ice everywhere,as white as one can imagine.

Lighting

Though we were there in the morning, yet there was no sun due to the heavy cloud cover. What I thought was to show more contrast and to get an artistic effect with the clouds as the background and the trail to draw in the viewer and towards the dark-brown mountains capped with snow.

Equipment

I used Motorola X Play to take this shot. Quite crisp a shot by a mobile, right!? I had a DSLR then but I had little idea as to how to operate the thing. All the buttons scared me so I thought rather to take the shot from my Mobile itself!

Inspiration

The thing that appealed me about this place was the snow-capped mountains, the trails and the snow! I hadn't seen snow as white as that anywhere! I wanted to potray the beauty of the place amidst the erraneous calm and the soft flow of the chilly winds.

Editing

I tweaked the exposure and the contrast to get an appealing effect of the mountains and the clouds behind. I did not do much because I wanted the picture to maintain its naturalism.

In my camera bag

Usually, whenever I go out for exploring I take a wide-angle lens 18-55mm along with a Telephoto lens 55-200mm in case I have to isolate a subject from the rest of the scene.

Feedback

I would say, think about what really you want to capture first, before pressing the shutter button all the way down. Research about the place beforehand, find out the time at which the sun would rise, there are many apps to find the same and set your schedule accordingly so that you reach there on time. You certainly do not want to miss the sunrise. Also, think about the subjects you want to include in your frame, the foreground, the mid-tones and the background. Review your shot each time you click the shutter button. And yes, do play with the White Balance, he's a naught boy!
