Behind The Lens

Location

South Georgia Island, St. Andrew's Bay. Taking the 21 day Antarctica cruise is a must. If you just go to Antarctica you miss sights like this. You stop at S. Georgia and the Falklands. So worth it!

Time

This was midday and just before Christmas. I just could not believe what I was seeing. We were told there were half a million King Penguins. They walked right by us and did not seem to care at all that we were there.

Lighting

I had to use what was visible or 'there'. No flash allowed. Though I really didn't need flash. It was overcast but not raining which made it nice.

Equipment

I took this photo with a Sony Rx10IV at a shutter of 1/200 since I was not going for a long exposure.

Inspiration

I just could not believe what I was seeing. We were told there were half a million King Penguins. They walked right by us and did not seem to care at all that we were there.

Editing

I crop a bit with clarity and Basic panel in Lightroom. I don't like to overdo processing and like to have it appear just as I saw it.

In my camera bag

Well, this was before I had all my Sony's including my 200-600 lens. But I carry what I need for the purpose. If it's wildlife, I will carry my Sony 7R1iv with the 200-600 lens but also the Sony Rx10 in case something is closer. I do have a 14-24 wide angle for landscape or night photography that I now use.

Feedback

Look at what is in front of you and take it in with your eye. Look through the viewfinder and try to compose what you saw without it. I don't use the back of the screen to compose shots. Not only does it eat batteries, but the viewfinder composition allows you to move with the camera and shoot what 'appeals' to you.
