Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a neighbors ranch while working cattle. The subject is the father of one of the ranch hands. This man is a life long cowboy who has worked in the cattle business for many years. His wisdom is always welcome as he guides his son and the younger cowboys in the ranch operation. A throw back to traditional cowboy way of life.

Time

The lighting had just improved after a dark and foggy early morning. The cattle had just been driven into the working pens,

Lighting

The lighting was very difficult due to the fog. This shot was taken in total natural light. In the early morning of the shoot, it was a "shoot and hope" situation, but the sun got higher the light turned into magic with the natural defusion from the fog.

Equipment

Im an old dinosaur when it comes to my equipment. I shoot with a Nikon D3s that I started my sports photography with several years ago. It has been a rock! Its never let me down, and has proven to be more than adaquite in most of my projects. This shot was hand held with my Nikon"nifty fifty"(50mm). Love this lens especially for black and white portraits. No other equipment was used as I like to keep it simple and as natural as possible.

Inspiration

The character of his face and expression! Look at the eyes! This portrait screms of wisdom and experience! Inspiration is the easy part when presented with a fun subject.

Editing

The post processing was minimal. A little brightening, and a little blacker black. The shot was cropped just to tighten up the frame.

In my camera bag

My everyday bag consists of a hard case pelican this is watertight and will take a beating in the back of a pickup. Im a Nikon guy. Old school D3s, 50mm, 24-200, and a 300mm get most of the work. My tripod is a Gitzo carbon fiber beast which i could not live without. It is topped with Oben GH-30 Gimbal Head. Cant be too stable and the movement of a gimbal. Great combination!

Feedback

The best advice I have is the traditional photog info that every knows and is tried and true. Know your equipment and be confident in its function. It has to be automatic when the shot presents itself! Im always searching for light. "Different" light, that makes the subject interesting. Thats the magic! Unusal shooting angles that most people don't ususally see standing flatfoot on the ground. Contrast and expression are huge!
