Location
I took this photo at Jigokudani national park in Nagano prefecture, Japan.Time
I was staying in Nagano city, So I had too travel a bit to get at the location. I remember taking an early train from Nagano train station to a small town of which I can't remember the name anymore. After the train I had to take a bus into the mountains until it couldn't go further anymore because of the icy roads. After the bus ride, I had too walk about 20 minutes, I guess, to the head of an icy mountain trail that took me inside the park. That icy mountain trail was still a 30 to 40 minute walk to the monkey hot spot. After this journey I was still able to take this picture somewhere in the morning, while the light was still pretty ok.Lighting
I remember that this day was a pretty sunny day with blue skies. So I tried to mask this amount of sunlight to level up with the subject that had his head in the steam coming off from the water.Equipment
I Used a canon 6d with my 100-400 mm lensInspiration
These monkeys fascinated me ever since I saw them on tv as a kid. If I ever would travel to Japan, I just had to see them.Editing
I just did some basic post-processing I believe. In my camera bag
It depends whether I want to shoot landscapes our wildlife. If I want to shoot landscapes I have some wide angled lens with me along with some filters like a polaroid and some nd filters. I also use a tripod. If I want to shoot wildlife I have my tripod together with some zoom lenses.Feedback
These monkey's sit there all day and the place can be pretty crowded with (local) tourists. Be as patient as possible and don't leave within the hour.
