She danced down the street right past me! From the Ballet Palm Beach and a lovely young, very young trainee.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a Saturday night in the Wynwood District of Miami--where anything can happen at any moment! Here, a vintage Thunderbird, wall art pulsating with the energy of the neighborhood and a young ballerina pirouetting down the street to the delight of her parents nearby.

Time

I took this photo on the first Saturday of the New Year in January 2019, as I crisscrossed Wynwood's streets a bit before dusk. There were fewer visitors, since it was just after New Year's Day and Wynwood had settled down to its normal but nonetheless electric pace.

Lighting

Nightfall was approaching and all I wanted to do was capture with my iPhone the grace, youth and beauty of this young ballerina on pointe in a decidedly urban context. Because the unexpected is always in the air in the Wynwood District, very few people even took notice of her repeated pirouetting down the street--most people on the other hand were admiring the Thunderbird parked at the curb.

Equipment

I used the camera I always have with me--and, at the time it was the iPhone 7 plus---no flash, no dash, no tripod, no extra lenses.

Inspiration

I had spent the day photographing the famous street and wall art of Wynwood with the passersby providing context and scale to the walls. In this particular instance the sight of a young ballerina dancing down a side street while her Mom took photos brought me to a full stop to see exactly what was going on. A ballet fan myself, it was very easy to see that, using the burst mode on my iPhone, I would find the right image of the car, the wall and the ballerina.

Editing

I cropped the photo and removed some of the telephone wires in the background. Nothing more.

In my camera bag

I normally have my iPhone in my pocket--makes for traveling light and responding in a nanosecond.

Feedback

I always look to other VB photographers for lessons learned from their work. In the case of the Wynwood District, one must be ready to walk the area morning noon and night because happenings such as a ballerina on pointe on a Saturday night come and go in a flash.
