Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at home against a wall. I live in Quebec, Canada.

Time

In the morning. But been inside gives me total controls of the lighting.

Lighting

I used 2 spots; on was a softbox and the other one was a "kick" for background lighting.

Equipment

Plain old Canon 40D with 28mm lens. I had my camera on a tripod. My ideal setup is using my camera on a tripod with a remote trigger to avoid shaking blur.

Inspiration

The model has a beautiful natural face and I wanted to capture it without any makeup or hairstyle. A natural beauty that is.

Editing

The only processing was cropping the image and balancing the contrast a bit. No modifications have been made on it.

In my camera bag

Usually, I bring with me a big bag containing 2 studio flashes with a softbox and an umbrella. I also have a small reflector. I usually have a Canon 5D MkII with SIGMA lenses (30mm, 50mm, 85mm) and Canon 135mm. Today I only work with PRIME lenses. I also use a remote shutter and a tablet connected to my camera.

Feedback

There is no secret here, just practice, practice and practice again. The digital world is an invaluable asset when it comes to the studying of photography; with the previews or live stream to a computer or tablet, you can have direct feedback of your setup. Humans are very efficient to interpret facial expressions. It is important that your model isn't stressed in front of the lens because we will feel it on the final image. One trick I have is to push the trigger when the model is not "waiting" for it; I don't want to capture any anticipation of the model. Talk to her, make her act as natural as she can get without anticipating the trigger.
