Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in San Antonio, Texas. It was a football game between Austin College and Trinity University. The two schools are Division III schools for athletic purposes, but are two of the highest rated academic schools in Texas and in the country.

Time

This game was played in the mid afternoon in early September.

Lighting

I remember the lighting was quite harsh and I could only shoot from one side of the field as the shadows were too strong shooting from the other side of the field. It was a cloudless sky, which made the lighting that much harder. I prefer to shoot football games in overcast conditions. I shoot everything in manual mode so bright sunlight and moving up and down the sidelines forces me to adjust my settings frequently.

Equipment

I took this photo with my Canon EOS Mark II N camera, a Canon 300 mm, f 2.8 lens with a 1.4 extender on a monopod.

Inspiration

I love to shoot sports. Austin College is my alma mater and I played football for Austin College many years ago. When I first started shooting sports, many of my early games were of Austin College. I took every opportunity I could to photograph my alma mater.

Editing

I do not do a lot of post processing on my sports photos. I do usually apply some sharpening and adjust the exposure if necessary, but that is all.

In my camera bag

I now shoot with a Canon 70D and will either bring my Canon 70 - 200 f 2.8 lens or my 300 mm f 2.8 lens. If it is a day game, I will use my 1.4 extender. I also pack a 28 - 70 lens so that I can take photos of the players or group team shots after the game without having to move back 40 yards. I sometimes carry an older Canon camera with the smaller lens to get shots in the end zone.

Feedback

The more you know about the game you are shooting the better. If you understand the game, you can anticipate where the action will be and get a better shot. Also, talk to the coaches and officials before a sporting event to make sure you do not interfere with them during the game or to assure them that you will not interfere. I have had officials apologize for getting in my way. When they do this I tell them that it is my job to stay out of their way. If you get on their right side you will have much more flexibility in where you position yourself around the field or court.
