Behind The Lens

Location

Taken an a daytrip in my local area, the day can change from drab to glorious in the passage of a cloud.

Time

Late morning the sun peaked out to reveal signs of a grand day... harsh for photographing but warm to the sole.

Lighting

Being the extremes from crisp shadows and glaring sunlight and the limited latitude of imaging, one has to shift gears in approach. Rather than going for standard landscape, why not go for the artists pencil and paper style. If you cant fully capture the range of the image in one shot take the avenue of pencil and paper palate. Silhouettes ( pen & ink style) may, in instances also work, but it is usually better to fill in a bit of the middle ground to convey to the viewer a little more information.

Equipment

These days I use a mirrorless Sony after jumping ship from Canon. However, if you are serious about your work you pick the tool/format that does the job. Sometimes opportunities pop up and you need to act quickly, but generally concepts develop as a result of working at them. The closer you get to your idea the clearer it will become... do not make the assumption that you are 'finished' with your subject.

Inspiration

In this shot it was the simplicity of lines that grabbed my attention. Almost all images benefit from simplifying.

Editing

There is always some post processing to tidy-up. Generally I try to "get it right the first time" which is not to say you don't take a number of images initially, bracketing not only exposures but 'thoughts' and framing as well.

In my camera bag

\At one time it was a mobile studio of gear and a Sherpa.... .Age has reduced that to 35mm with 35-200 locked in hand. At the ready are a macro and 400-600, density filters small reflectors (for macro) and CLEANING cloths. SOLID tripod at the ready...

Get to know your scene... spend time … learn the environment you are in. It leads to 'Seeing"
