Location
I took this photo at one of my favourite locations, Stanley Park, which is located in the heart of Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. The most beautiful place in the world. I consider myself very lucky to call this home.Time
This picture was taken close to sunset. The sky a gold blue, which made the water look like liquid gold and I wanted to capture that.Lighting
This is my absolute favourite way to light women, not that I do much if anything else... The way a woman’s figure intertwines with the interplay of the sunlight dancing on the waves. Nothing is more beautiful.Equipment
So I generally bring my Nikon D750 to the beach. I also never leave home without my 640 WS Einstein, battery pack and some form of modifier. I believe this was a soft box.Inspiration
When I took this photo I was still studying and experimenting with light. We met in the early evening when the sun was still high and we experimented with similar backgrounds as the sun sank lower and lower. I guess my inspiration was simply “light” and Erika has this angelic ethereal quality about her.Editing
Not really. This photo was taken well before I knew how to use Photoshop. I would have brought up the whites and highlights in Lightroom, but that’s probably about it. My rule of thumb, lighting is key. Get it right in camera. In my camera bag
Nikon D750. 50mm. 24-70mm. 70-200mm. Hasselblad X1D 21mm, 80mm, 35mm. 640 ws Einstein, with 2xbattery pack, a light modifier and stand. And, a bag of tricks. Yes! It’s a lot. Sometimes I only bring one camera. It would really depend on the shoot.Feedback
You absolutely need a strobe, because this shot is all about balancing light. You have so many options when you use reflected sunlight as a backlight and a strobe. You can blow out your background light, balance it, or deepen the colours by continuing to close the aperture and slower the shutter speed. And best yet, the model is always perfectly lit.
