Taken at Oulton Park race track on one of its vintage race days... I love old cars they have so much characterTime
Taken just before Midday on a sunny with broken cloud type of day... Choosing the right corner at the right time of day makes track photography challenging. I tend to shoot this corner from this side only on cloudy days or later in the day as to negate the sun behind the car.Lighting
As it was a cloudy day this helped diffuse the light across the car giving it a neutral feel ...These cars are highly polished prior to the race so reflections are always a problem when its sunny and I would normally work the other side of the track in the trees so as to get shade... Always walk both sides of the track when your new so as to work out the best locations prior to the race... Most races last around 20 minutes to 4 hours so try to have 3 or 4 go to locations where you know the light...Equipment
Nikon D600 with the 150-600mm Sigma Sport lens hand held ..Inspiration
I love this corner as it allows head on shots at fast shutter speeds and just turning 90 degrees you can pan the car as it goes past you..... As I use the Nikon it has U1 & U2 settings so my camera would be set U1 1/1000th F8 - F16 ISO Auto …. U2 1/125th F8 - F16 ISO Auto this way as the car approaches the corner U1..... then U2 as they go past me at the fence and a perfect pan speed...Editing
Processed in Photoshop CC & used the NIK Google software Silver Efex Pro to convert to B&W..In my camera bag
At races D600 with 150-600mm Sigma sport 28mm Nikkor f2.8 .. The brass 85mm Petzval lens for pre 1940 cars to give some character... A Sony 6300 & Zonlai 22mm F1.8 … Plenty of batteries and drinks...Feedback
Track racing is a fast sport during normal daylight so you need to bring long lenses to get close in or if using shorter length 200mm get alongside … As they go around you get the chance to experiment and then chimp your results before they get back (always listen for the engines getting closer whilst chimping) Experiment with different shutter speeds even get down to 1/25th and lower for more artistic movement shots ..
