Congratulations on winning the "Locomotives" photo challenge. I loved the long aspect ratio with the palm trees, the locomotive light, rickety tracks, and of course, the photo-bombing chicken. Well done.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this rather comical shot up in Lahaina when the train there was doing a test run before the Christmas season

Time

Late afternoon, early evening trying to capture the shot without getting the bright sun in it too much, Luckily the train ran north to south as the sun was on the west of me.

Lighting

I stood near the tracks in partial shade from a high hedge nearby. All natural light, no addons, no flash.

Equipment

I use a Sony A7Rii, Sel 82000 lens. With this shot it was handheld although I did use the tripod during this shoot.

Inspiration

I live here on the Hawaiian island of Maui and never have taken a shot of a train and did not even know if we had one here. At Christmas time however they have a train running a few miles mainly for tourists and children wanting to get this experience. I wanted to get the experience of shooting a moving train ,t he steam , the smoke, the long exposure night shots as I have never done this before. The chicken was my idea, an add on. The free range chickens and roosters wake me at 3,4,5 am and I thought I would share what I thought about that!

Editing

Due to the headlight, time of day I did very little to this shot, some minor enhancements and yes I did add the chicken

In my camera bag

I primarily use the Sony A 7RII with a SEL 18-200mm F 3.5-6.3 lens. I also carry a backup , the Canon Rebel 5 but rarely use it anymore. Although the Canon is not my favorite, one never knows when I will need those lenses or the camera. It is always wise to carry MORE. In my backpack extras of everything including car chargers, plenty of batteries and memory cards as I shoot in RAW format.I carry also the tripod and monopod with me and an umbrella, flashlight, and Macro tubes.Always learning and so my equipment grows with it. I don't forget the business cards and ipad. I try to be prepared for any shot that could come along.

Feedback

I am a landscape photographer primarily so I need Patience and lots of it at times! Take risks, shoot outside your comfort zone and get creative, get low, get high, shoot in the dark, shade and sun, shoot everything and then go with what feels right for YOU.I have learned alot more since taking this photo as I always am inspired to keep learning. Look at the angle, composition, what is it you want your viewers to know about the subject? Do you have tripod, optics clean, batteries, card in place? In other words have learned to be in the moment and really think and compose the shot I want. Sometimes I do and sometimes I forget but no matter what I just do it! I always stay open to learn more!
