This was shot at Little Qualicum Falls here in Vancouver Island. My friends had just finished up a big race, and were doing some exploring. They’d heard about the falls, paddled it the year before. This year the conditions were perfect.Time
It was the perfect time of day for this. Later in the morning, well past the golden hour, but the diffusion from the mist was almost setting the clock back 3 hours.Lighting
The mist had just started to burn off, and the sun was creating a nice orange cast. This helped make all the surrounding colours pop, and creating the perfect light in an otherwise dreary overcast day.Equipment
The tripod was imperative for this shot. I wanted a composite of Bryce as he went down the falls, so everything needed to be shot from the exact same position. Canon 5d Mark iii Canon 17-40 f/4L Vanguard Tripod Pixel TW-283 remoteInspiration
I have seen countless shots of skiers and snowboarders composited together like this, but very rarely have I seen a whitewater kayaker in the same style.Editing
This is a composite of 9 images overlaid together. First some light editing in Lightroom, then opening as layers in photoshop. Didn’t need to align anything, and simply added an inverted layer mask, and painted Bryce in for the different positions during his run. I also masked in the spotter Glen from one of the shots. In my camera bag

My best advice is to be patient. Wait for the perfect time to shoot, spend the time getting set up first, check exposure, and wait. Proper prep work will reward those with the patience to relax. Plus having a bunch of athletes who are awesome doesn’t hurt either.
