Only found in California, tule elk once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. However, by the end of the 19th century, they had been hunted to near extinction with only a few animals remaining. Rigorous conservation efforts saw a return of this majestic animal to healthy numbers and several herds can now be found throughout the state, their numbers having increased to over 4,000. Tule elk remain protected by law.
