Location
This photo was taken along a path in Oregon's beautiful Forest Park. My wife and I came across this massive tree that had fallen over and created a natural bridge. As my wife walked across the tree to take photos I couldn't pass up the opportunity to capture her in such an amazing atmosphere.Time
Surprisingly, this photo was take during mid-day around 1-2pm. Usually this is not an ideal time to shoot because of how harsh the light can be but since we were deep into the park, the trees provided excellent shade for me to capture this shot.Lighting
Whenever I'm out in nature, I love to accentuate the warmth that the colors bring out. I wanted this photo to appear moody and it was important for the light to be relatively soft. Luckily we were under a heavy canopy of trees so not much light was able to shine through, which allowed me to capture muted colors and create a moody atmosphere.Equipment
The only equipment used for this shot was my trusted Sony A7RII with the 24-70mm F2.8 GM lens.Inspiration
I've been to Oregon a couple times but this was my wife's first visit. I love to capture candid photos of her in nature and found Forest Park to be the perfect location. She seemed so excited to explore the area and was constantly trying to get off the beaten path to see what nature had to offer. As she sat down in the middle of this tree I noticed that the composition, color, and lighting was perfect so I did my best to snap a couple shots and came away with one of my favorite photos.Editing
Absolutely. About 90% of my photos are edited in Lightroom AND Photoshop. I process each photo in Lightroom first, which allows me to mute the colors through desaturation and reduce the highlights. I then export the photos into Photoshop so that I can boost the warmth, apply a vignette, and slightly increase the color contrast. In my camera bag
I never go shooting without my Sony A7RII and my 24-70mm F2.8 GM lens. I shoot with this combo about 90% of the time and really love the photos that I'm able to capture. A 5-stop Breakthrough Photography ND filter, wireless shutter release, lens cloths, and multiple batteries are also a must for my camera bag.Feedback
I think the key to shots like this is to make sure that the lighting and atmosphere is correct. If it is a gloomy day with low-light conditions and you're out in nature during Fall (which really brings out the warmth in the colors) then you'll see great success in capturing these shots. If you're shooting a portrait, make sure to drop your f-stop to create a nice bokeh effect and really isolate your subject.
