This was taken on a small city beach in Ludington, Michigan. The body of water is Lake MichiganTime
This would have been at sunset after the sun had gone below the horizon. Probably based on the time of year, around 8:15 pmLighting
One thing I've learned with regard to shooting sunsets is that it's not over till its dark. The sky and clouds kept developing a new look about every 20 minutes. This was my favorite sky that afternoon.Equipment

Sunsets on Lake Michigan are magical and this one very much kept that reputation intact! I also enjoyed watching people next to the water as they all gazed at the fleeting light. There was almost a quiet reverence as the light diminished.Editing
The main thing on a sky of this magnitude was to make sure my white balance was correct. I thought to myself, people are going to wonder about these colors but, this is a very accurate rendering. I would say basics were employed to make sure I kept it as pure as possible. The humidity was very low that day so I did not have to worry about haze. I may have knocked down the saturation a tad because skies like this can sometimes be overwhelming. I shot this initially as a raw file. (And now I'm wondering where that is...LOL)In my camera bag
At the time of this shooting I was a pure Canon guy for my camera's. I had a Tamron 70-200mm G2 along with the Sigma lens mentioned above. I also had a Tokina 11-16mm and a Canon pancake 40mm.Feedback
Know your weather, plan your shoot, take your time! And make sure you carry a back up battery, SD card, and a lens that might just do what you want if the one you are using doesn't seem to be getting the job done. Lastly, for Sunsets, don't leave until the light has left, especially on a large body of water. Have fun and your experience will always stay with you each time you revisit that picture.
