Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Kinderdijk, in The Netherlands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Time

The photo was taken at 6:30 am, almost an hour before sun rise.

Lighting

I got to this point early, to make sure that I captured the first colours in the sky just before sunrise. What I did not expect was that the night lights from the nearby towns and industries created this effect. And the total absence of wind made for a beautiful reflection in the water.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 5D Mk iv with a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, on a tripod.

Inspiration

I like photographing reflections on water and even more so if the lighting is out of the ordinary, so seeing this when I arrived at Kinderdijk I just had to take this photo!

Editing

I photograph in RAW, so I always do some post-processing, generally quite light. In this case, I cut a bit on the highlights and opened up the shadows, corrected a bit the exposure, as I had under-exposed to make sure I avoided excessively "burning" the bright light in front of the closest windmill, did a slight correction of the white balance (in auto when shooting) and cropped a little bit.

In my camera bag

My camera is a Canon EOS 5D Mk iv and depending on what I am planning to photograph I will carry a 24-70mm lens, a 16-35 and/or a 70-300. I also have a 100mm macro, which I use for macro photography (which I have to start doing more of) or in general when I want more of a bookeh, for which I think it is a great lens.

Feedback

The only advice I can give is "do what you like to do"! But, in general, getting up (very) early gets great rewards. I like the evening light, but I think nothing beats a crisp cold morning for photography. But every time I return to a site I find different lighting, so going back again and again is also well worth it.
