Coprinus comatus, the shaggy ink cap, lawyer's wig, or shaggy mane, is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out.
I was driving to work and saw a few of these sticking out of a carpet of dead leaves on the entrance of a driveway. It took only seconds to throw my car on the pavement, run out, take the picture and depart again, before the world started honking :-)

Great image! I, at first, thought it was a "knitted"or " handmade" mushroom.. I didn't realize it was a real mushroom until I read your description. Quite amazing.
