Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in River North in Chicago's Gallery District. I work in a space not only that sells new and used Leica cameras and lenses, but houses a small gallery space. This was taken in a window reflection on the second floor of our building that also houses other galleries. I was trying to finish up my roll of film on my way to work that day and I've always love the light that comes in this window. While the shot came out grainy leaving the details dark and fuzzy, I'm always one for a moody film shot any day.

Time

This was taken on a Saturday fall morning around 10 a.m.

Lighting

Natural, filtered light is my favorite light. Clouds filtering the sun, windows, reflected light from buildings is always a pleasure to work with.

Equipment

This was shot on a 35mm Ricoh film camera.

Inspiration

Selfies were not born in the digital era on cell phones. As long as cameras and photographers have existed, there have been self portraits of those photographers. While film has almost died and had somewhat of a resurgence, younger people in this time don't associate selfies with film cameras, and seeing my reflection in that moment I knew I needed to capture a film selfie.

Editing

It was hard to decide what post to do if any because it's film, but I had the option to clean up the grain, and decided not to.

In my camera bag

You can tpyicaclly find a 35mm Ricoh with a 55mm lens, a Ricohflex twin lens camera, and a Canon Digital Rebel.

Feedback

Always find and use natural light. Photographing yourself or anything through a reflection can take you into a different world. Your perspective will certainly change and you'll be surprised what you capture.
