Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Multnomah Falls in Oregon.

Time

I took this photo in the afternoon, around 2pm. I was on a family trip and it started raining right as we got out of the car. We hurried as quick as we could to the waterfall to get a good view of it. The wind was blowing like crazy and created a cool effect of the water blowing to the side on the rocks.

Lighting

The lighting was natural lighting. It was outdoors and it quickly changed from sunny, to a downpour rain by the time I got to the falls. It was cloudy and there was no harsh light.

Equipment

I used my Canon 5D Mark III. I used my Canon 24-105mm lens, shot at around 80mm. I had a polarizer filter on the lens and it was shot handheld, with no tripod.

Inspiration

I have always wanted to visit this waterfall. And I got lucky enough that my sister moved to Oregon a year ago, so my family took a trip to visit her. On our way down from the airport in Portland we stopped here. I loved the way the fall colors surrounded the bridge and the water from the falls blew across the rocks. I've seen so many wide shots of this waterfall, but wanted to zoom in to get a different view.

Editing

I did post processing to add contrast to the rocks and water to make it stand out more. I also brought out the vibrant yellow color of the laves a bit more.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I have my Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 24mm 1.4L lens, Canon 24-105mm, Canon 85mm 1.8, Canon 70-200mm. I also have a variable ND filter, and circular polarizer. I also carry extra batteries, extra SD cards, and a lens cloth.

Feedback

This image was captured in a very unplanned way. I did not know the weather was going to be cold, windy, and wet, but I tried to make the best of it. I would suggest to others to always be able to adapt to what you originally had planned for an image. I had planned to set up my tripod and take a long exposure photo, but there were tons of people so I couldn't get the best angle and it was raining so the front of my lens got blurry with rain drops sitting for a long exposure. So I decided to take advantage of the interesting way the wind blew the rain and take a more close up image of the falls to show detail of the water and people on the bridge. Always make the best of the situation and landscape you are put in.
