This beautiful sunset was discovered on the open air palza, high above the LSU Museum of Art in Baton Rouge, LouisianaTime
The sun had just set in the west across the Mighty Mississippi. Reflecting into the slow moving river forming its own natural vignette.Lighting
The light from the sunsets at this location are a thing of beauty. It is a balance between the blast of heat here in the Deep South and the blast of direct light from our nearest star. The best time I have found is right after it sets. The oranges and purples and all shades of blue work together for me.Equipment
I am a Sony guy. This was my A7Rm2 (42meg) and a Zeiss 24/240. Hand held at 1/40th iso 3200Inspiration
The Louisiana Museum of Art (LSUMOA) has an arrangement with a roof top resteraunt in the same building. LSUMOA holds many events there. Being familiar with both, I know what can be done from the open air deck. I have considered a project of a year's worth of nightly sunset shots from there since most everynight the heat, the Deep South humidity, and the open expanse lends itself to this spectacular view. The mighty river, the open colorful sky, the soft light, and the twinkle of the riverfront activity calls to meEditing
I did some work in Photoshop on this image. The biggest part, aside from small local adjustments, was combing three images together to get this very wide panorama. I did it manuely not with the semi preset in PScc. Doing so gave me a chance to develope skilss for other things and besides, it is fun :-)In my camera bag
I carry a Sony A7Rm2 with an almost never off Zeiss 24/240. I find this combianation can let you creat macro to moon shots. On occassion if I am shooting for Opera Louisiane (anther passion) I also carry Sony A7m2 with a 50mm f1.8 In the 'field' I take a rarely used tripod, a polarizing filter, and extra batteries in my front pockets - just in caseFeedback
You have heard it a thousand times... Shoot what you feel, not what you see. There is a wide wide world of beauty that is conventional and unconventional... seek both. This is a large unfolding landscape but there are tiny objects along the shores that offer opportunity as well. There is the expanse of color here and there are the structures that underlay it all that lend itself to Black and White. Learn to see is the most important thing. Develope the habit of seeing not looking. The clutter of the modern world with a zillion impressions forced on us can hide the serene. Learn to see. Learn to see.
